The Parsons DEED Labs’s public talk series focuses on critical aspects in the artisan sector today. In conversation with Pablo Calderón Salazar (design researcher), Ibada Wadud (Parsons faculty), Andrea Bury (entrepreneur), and moderated by DEED Lab Research Fellow Alifiya Mutaher, we will explore language and labels in the artisan sector. We will question who gets to call themselves a designer, the privileges that come with these labels and in what contexts may there be benefits in the label “artisan” or “artisanal”. Through the experiences of our guest speakers, we will analyze the role of designers in artisan-designer collaborations and what opportunities may lie for designers to enact roles beyond “designing”.
